Get support with your Fellowship application

Looking for answers?

On this page you’ll find specific guidance for each of the main questions in the Multitrack Fellowship application.

Plus a few general pointers!

General pointers

  • There are 11 main questions you need to answer, and these will be the first questions on the application form. Of those 11 key questions, 6 of them require answers of 200 words or less (or 3 mins or less if you’re completing the audio version of the application). The rest are short / tickbox type questions.

Once you’ve done those first 11 questions, the rest of the application consists of short / tickbox type questions asking for information about you that will be quick and easy to answer.

We will also ask you to upload an example of your audio work. This should be no more than 8 minutes long, and it can be an extract from a longer piece. You’ll be able to give some detail about what you’ve submitted in question 11.

Scroll down this page for specific guidance on how to answer the main application questions.

  • The application form includes 6 questions that have a word limit (never more than 200 words).

You don’t need to hit the word limit if you can express yourself fully in fewer words! However, please try not to go too far past the word limit. We’re not going to disqualify you for being a few words over - but we also won’t be able to read much more than that because we always have a lot of applications to go through.

  • We want to make this application process as accessible as possible, for anyone who wants to apply. That’s why this year we’re trialling the option of submitting audio responses to the main application questions. Read more about that in our FAQs.

If you’re facing any other barriers to completing your application, please contact us. We will be very happy to help.

Question guidance

Here’s some guidance on how to answer each of the main questions on the application.

We’ve explained exactly what sort of stuff we’re looking to see in each answer, to help you make an application that’s strong, specific, and individual to you.

  • Later in the application form we will ask about the things you’ve made and your experience in audio. So for this first question you can focus more on what it is that you love about audio as a medium, and why you want it to be your job.

We are looking for entry level fellows, so you don't need to worry if you feel you lack professional experience. We are interested in anything that can show us that you have a passion for audio, and skills we can help you develop during the Fellowship.

Some examples of things you could include here are:

    • What drew you to audio (as a listener and/or a maker)

    • Why you think audio is an effective medium for creative expression or sharing ideas

  • We want to hear what’s motivating you to apply for this opportunity. Some examples of things you could talk about here are…

    • Specific skills you want to learn

    • Specific types of experience you want to get

    • Any challenges you’ve faced in accessing the audio industry

    • Your ambitions in audio and how this fellowship could help you achieve them

    • Anything else about why you’re drawn to this opportunity

Whatever your answer, we recommend being as specific as possible.

  • This is a tick box question - please select the option that matches most closely. Depending on your answer, you may be asked to give a bit more info (less than 30 words).

We'd also like to know how much you know about things like researching ideas, coordinating projects, recording audio and using editing software.

Some examples of the type of work you might have done:

    • Produced a podcast of your own

    • Helped someone else produce a podcast

    • Worked on an oral history project

    • Volunteered at a radio station

    • Hosted your own show

    • Recorded interviews with friends or family

    • Made experimental soundscapes just for fun

    • Done an introductory course or workshop in podcasting

  • A lot of the questions in this application are focused on the creative elements of audio production, but in this question we’re looking to understand your skills, experience and interest in the more organisational aspects of the job (which are really important for any producer). So you should think about:

    • Any experience you have doing admin and organisational tasks in other jobs

    • How your experience in educational or other settings might have given you organisational and administrative skills

    • Remember that these skills are very transferable, so you can demonstrate your organisational skills using examples that have nothing to do with audio!

    • We want to understand whether you enjoy this type of work, and/or that you understand its importance to the overall production process

  • The purpose of this question is for us to get to know you as a person in a more rounded way, beyond just your experience with and passion for audio production.

So you could tell us about things like:

    • Other passions you have outside of audio

    • Other creative pursuits you’re involved in

    • If you’re changing careers, what were you doing before?

    • Whatever else you think we should know!

Think of it like you’ve been asked to write a short biography of yourself for a website profile. What would you include?

  • This is a multiple choice question where you can tick areas of interest

  • This is another multiple choice question.

It’s ok not to know the answer to this one, and you’re not committing yourself by ticking a certain box either! This question just helps us get a feel for your potential interests.

Check out the FAQs for more information about each of the specialisms mentioned in the question.

  • Note - if you are only interested in a production management placement, you do not need to submit an audio piece, and can skip questions 10 and 11. If you’ve expressed interest in a general production, editorial or technical production placement (even if you’ve also ticked production management), then you must answer these questions.

Please submit a piece of audio that is no more than 8 minutes long.

This is your chance to show us some of your best audio work. Whatever you choose should be something that shows us how creative you can be. We want to hear something that helps us understand any (or all!) of the following:

    • What happens when you pour all your passion into a project

    • What kind of stories you love to tell

    • How creative you can be

    • Your ability to see a project through from start to finish

In the next question, we will ask you to tell us more about this audio and your involvement in making it. It’s ok to choose collaborative work, but be sure it gives you the chance to talk about your involvement and showcase your talents

We have asked for no more than 8 mins of audio- but this can be an excerpt of a longer piece, or a collage of shorter pieces. If you just want to send one short piece, that’s fine too. Perhaps if you’re really new to audio, you might want to make something especially for this application- it’s up to you.

If you’re selecting an excerpt from a longer piece, don’t worry about having a sudden stop at 8 mins, or be concerned about finishing in the ‘right place’.

Our judges are looking for your ideas, passion and potential- not broadcast standard production. Everyone learns craft and technical skills as they go along, so please don’t let less-than-perfect audio get in the way of your submission. In fact, you might like to talk about challenges you faced and what you’d like to improve in the questions that follow.

  • Tell us about the piece you’ve shared. What exactly did you do? This could be research, recording, presenting etc. If it was a collaboration, be really clear what you contributed to the work.

Tell us about why you made this piece. How does the style or content show your personal voice and passion for audio?

You might like to tell us if you faced any challenges, what you are proud of, or whether you would you change or do anything differently?
